BRANDING YOURSELF –
CREATING THE “IT” FACTOR

By: LyNea “LB” Bell | President, BH Talent & Literary Agency

The old adage, “You are the master of your own fate,” is true. So, how badly do you want to nail that audition? How deep would you dig inside yourself to get that movie role?

Chances are you don’t realize how talented you really are. You are on a path to greatness and it’s not by chance. It’s because of YOU. However, in order to create magic, you must believe in your power to create “IT.”

The entertainment industry is overflowing with talented artists, but you will need to know what puts you above the rest aka what makes you stand out.

What you create for yourself makes you special. It’s your brand. That brand is your image and your asset. It’s the thing only you can package. That’s right! Only you. Because you control how you present yourself to agents, casting directors, producers, directors and network executives that will make a lasting impression.

Below are a few strategic tools to help you develop your brand:

Training
Know your worth. Know that to be successful you must continue to train and be coached. I meet so many talented people who do not believe they need to continue sharpening their craft. All the greats and even the elite continue to study and often become mentors.

Marketing | Advertise and promote yourself like your life depends on it. We are in a new era of social media and digital platforms - branding and marketing is a huge part in today’s world. Learn to be seen.

Know You | Know who you are and what you bring to your work. Your essence in each character is what ultimately lands the job. Know your weaknesses and use them as your strengths. Make this your signature, your brand.

I often ask actors what are their top fives? Your favorite top five TV shows, top five movies of all time. You are drawn to these characters because you see yourself in these roles. But can you identify what that looks likes? Have you mapped out the characters that resonate with you and have you mastered the essence you will bring portraying those characters?

We live in a world where society is drawn to authenticity. We relate to displayed emotion. In my strategy sessions, I offer this insight: The moment you start pretending to act is the moment you don’t book, because it’s not believable. Take a moment to draw from your inner experience. Can your audience relate to the character? Can you touch the audience’s emotions though your performance? Develop yourself through the character and live them.

Maintaining control is critical to succeeding in reaching your goal against the odds.

Know that you will not always get the role, no matter how talented you are. It’s nothing personal. They may have loved your audition, unfortunately the network, directors and producers went in a different direction. It’s not fun when I call my clients and let them know that they didn’t book that role they wanted. This is a business that requires tough skin. Don’t give up. Being rejected is not only common, but also inevitable. Remember, it’s business, nothing personal. Keep moving on to the next opportunity showcasing your brand.

We at BH Talent believe this wisp of self-knowledge will help you build confidence that will radiate long after your audition ends. Your talent agent will chart your course and create opportunities that will open the door to success.
